We are fully into the school year and trying to enjoy our FULL SCHEDULE!
We have just joined Peninsula Temple Shalom (PTS) and have enjoyed Rosh Hashanah services there. We know MANY families there and are VERY happy so far! They are all so welcoming, and both Rabbis (young, energetic - one a man and one a woman with a FABULOUS singing voice!) have both had great conversations with us on multiple occasions. The boys started Religious school last Sunday. The curriculum is great; Ryan will begin Hebrew (3rd grade) and Ethan will have a Hebrew tutor for a while to catch up (4th grade).
The boys are playing soccer again this Fall - on the same team actually - the Golden Nuggets!
The boys are also continuing their karate training....currently yellow belts but will soon test for orange belts.
The boys both love their teachers and classes this year - academics are ramping up, but both boys are ready. Both are strong readers (reading to learn now rather than learning to read); both love math and are doing multiplication and even long division. Ethan still loves writing and is going to be starting to learn the clarinet (his choice) this year. Ryan is ALL boy and prefers recess :) They both love chess and can't wait to play Oupa on their lego chess set when he visits next month.
I (Ang) am PTA president again this year; leading about 80 other parents in our efforts to support our underfunded California public school - but making it fun! We are off to a great start with many grand plans this year. Here's the back to school video that the parents of our 625 students will see tonight at Open House. David and I filmed and produced it!
Additionally, I am starting to work as a substitute teacher in my school district - have my first sub job tomorrow in 7th grade (help me!) I hope to see how it goes and explore teaching as my next career. I am really passionate about children and education (and all the experiences that a shared learning environment can provide). Will see how it goes.
David continues to be very busy and happy at Genentech....he has gotten two 'promotions' in the past few months....first, his and another team merged a few months ago, and he was asked to manage the new, larger team, and more recently, due to some restructuring, he was unceremoniously told that he was now officially a 'director' rather than 'senior'. The point is that he works hard, and it is not going un-noticed (as I type this update - he is at a Giants game for work today LOL!). He is also very involved with our school through FDC (Franklin Dad's Club) which he continues to serve on their executive board. He also has the Tough Mudder coming up and is training for this.
We all regularly try to keep active - we just completed a Spirit Run fundraiser for our school Foundation (5K for us and 10K for David). We go on weekend bike rides and hikes with Ginger and play basketball in our cul-de-sac. We are also frequently at our Gym and pool.
I'll close for now with our weekly schedule - not sure how we will make it all work - but we will!!
This is our standard - we also regularly fit in PTA/FDC meetings, orthodontist visits, playdates and other social plans and some physical activity as well as family movie nights and game nights AND we manage to have dinner ALL together most evenings (so nice David doesn't travel much!):
Monday - school 8:30-3 homework then karate 5-6pm
Tuesday - school 8:30-2 homework then karate 5-6pm
Wednesday - school 8:30-3 homework then religious school 4-6pm
Thursday - school 8:30-3 homework then soccer practice 5-6pm
Friday - school 8:30-3 then either soccer scrimmage 6-7pm or PTS services
Saturday - soccer games
Sunday - religious school 9-11am
Finally, David and I are starting to help plan our school's Turkey Trot again! Stay tuned for more info in case you want to support the boys! We are excited to be visiting SoCal over Thanksgiving week - taking the boys to Disney and LegoLand and meeting up with family for Hanukkah and Thanksgiving (including Neil, Stacie and Hailey!). Not sure exactly when we will get back to ATL though it can't be too long as we are missing everyone there terribly and have a close friend starting to battle his lung cancer.
