David and I are pretty determined to set a healthy example for the boys in the arena of healthy eating and exercising regularly. It's tough enough to live your life for yourself, but when you have two sets of diligent eyes on your every move, well it just magnifies the importance of all you do!
Kids tend to get plenty of physical activity if allowed to do so...they'd rather be moving than resting all day...so, no need for a treadmill for them (although they'd both love it if we let them!)...but the nutrition is trickier. As a modern day parent, it is down right tough with all the fast foods, processed foods, commercials, etc. to send the right message to your young children about what they eat. Mine would have Chick-fil-A and McDonalds every day if they could.
So, lately we have been explaining to Ethan why we can't have McDonalds every day....besides the financial issue of eating out daily....we want him to understand the health aspects. So, I introduced him to the food pyramid and how we eat a variety of foods to grow healthy and strong - over-simplified but that's the gist of it. The other day, he said he couldn't have McDonalds again because it wouldn't make him grow....so, had to clarify that a bit. Told him that there were healthy choices everywhere, even McDonalds but that if you ate a cheese burger every day, you wouldn't get the variety that you need and that you might get a big, fat belly (his term not mine). Then today, he tells me that he wants McDonalds but doesn't want to get a big fat belly :) Honestly, it is funny, I know that, but it is also tough.....to explain all these things we just take for granted and know.
