Lyrics

Ethan is very interested in the radio and real songs now mainly in the car. When we get in, he generally requests to listen to big people radio and doesn't want the movie or his kiddie CDs on, and Ryan will just go with the flow. So, apparently a lot of beats and choruses are appealing to a 5 year old...

On one hand, I am happy to occasionally get to listen to 'big people radio' too even though I tend to gravitate to talk radio more on my own. BUT, Ethan has so many questions about the lyrics! This morning, Cold Plays, Viva La Vida was on the radio. The lyric goes, "I use to rule the world....but that was when I ruled the world"...so, Ethan says "what does rule mean", so I explain that it means to control or be in charge of something like when a king rules his kingdom. This seemed like a good enough explanation to him, but the next question was based on him picking up on the fact that it was past tense. He asks, "why doesn't he still rule the world; what happened". Not so easy to answer that question....and not that you generally want to get that in depth on every song that comes on the radio...so, I explain that musical artists are just like people who make the books and movies that we read and watch and that they try to tell us a story but also leave some parts for us to imagine on our own....so, that got him brainstorming reasons on why the man no longer ruled the world.

It was cute and funny, but exhausting :) if we have to do that with every song. I guess it's time for me to download some songs that are in between. I know there are popular songs sang by kids and there are some artists that have put out kid CDs like Barenaked Ladies.

Ethan is Super Star of the week which I know I already told you, but today, I went in just before they had lunch to share Ruffles with the class and read Red Riding Hood - it's R week after all....trying to get Ethan to take Ryan as his show and tell on Friday, but he is leaning toward Ratatouille.

Ryan has been a challenge lately. He is fully potty trained and was doing well, but recently he has been having random accidents. Except I am pretty sure they aren't accidents. It isn't usually that he is too busy playing or distracted to remember to go. It's mainly from his reaction; he isn't shocked or surprised or sorry that it happened. I am pretty sure he is just doing it to assert himself - like, "I have a choice of whether to go in the potty or not, and I am choosing no"....it is only happening 1-3 times a week. I guess I am going to have to break out the reward chart again to give him more incentive to go to the potty.
